Great East Swim Suffolk Update

At Alton Water on 26th September 2009 up to 2000 swimmers will be taking part in this mass participation 1 mile swimming event. The event will start at 9am with the first wave of swimmers taking the plunge and followed every 30 minutes with 200 swimmers in subsequent waves.

Great East Swim Suffolk is a partnership event with Suffolk County Council, Anglian Water, Culture and Sport Delivery Partnership, Healthy Ambitions Suffolk, Choose Suffolk Tourism Partnership, British Swimming and Great Swim Partnership and contributes to Suffolk’s Community Strategy.

 

The SSP outcomes include:
• Wide participation in cultural, sporting and other leisure activities
• Increase cultural participation in Suffolk
• People are supported and encouraged to adopt healthy lifestyles
• Enable vulnerable adults to access and participate in sport

And contribute to NI sets:
• NI 8 Adult Participation in Sport
• NI 119 Self reported measure of people’s overall health and wellbeing
• LT10 Increased cultural participation in Suffolk
• LT1 Increased numbers of people volunteering in Culture and Sport

What’s on (The cultural Offer)
Farmers Market showcasing the best of Suffolk’s local producers, food and craft.

Suffolk Food Hall – will be providing fresh, hot locally produced refreshments

Sports and Physical Activity Area – which will give visitors and participants the opportunity to take part in cycling, walking and water sports activities all in the fabulous surroundings at Alton Water, an area of outstanding natural beauty.

People have the opportunity to see the elite Olympic and World Class Open Water swimmers compete to take the Women’s and Men’s Great Swim Honours.

Watch your swimmers on TV! - People will be able to spot family and friends on the big screen which will also be broadcast on Channel 4 in November. 

Bandstand Marathon – A bandstand of local musicians will entertain you as part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad Bandstand Marathon

Access the Internet and Information and Suffolk Tourist destinations on Suffolk’s Newest Mobile Library

Charities – Charity Marquees will be present to support and recognise swimmers who are participating and raising money

Change4Life – visit the Sport and Physical Activity area to pick up your Change4life goodies!
